The idea of youth – wasted, gilded or otherwise – has always featured prominently in M83's music. "I loved being a teenager," says Anthony Gonzalez, who is M83. "That's when I discovered music and started to take drugs and party with my friends."

That time of discovery – and of course the era in which Gonzalez was a teenager – greatly impacted the making of "Saturdays = Youth." "On this record I wanted to have the feeling of a teenager mixed with this period of the Eighties," Gonzalez explains.

If the doomy synthetic romance of his earlier work hinted at a fetish for Eighties goth staples such as Sisters of Mercy and The Cure, this album's chiming astro-pop finds Gonzalez taking a stroll on the sunnier side of the decade. Main influences for the album are English bands such as Tears For Fears and Cocteau Twins, as well as classic John Hughes teen movies such as "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles" (The red-haired Molly Ringwald look-alike on the cover is no mistake).

To realize his vision, Gonzalez enlisted the help of producers Ken Thomas and Ewan Pearson. Thomas, known for his work with Sigur Ros, Sugarcubes, Cocteau Twins, Suede and Clinic cut his teeth on outré acts such as Psychic TV and Alien Sex Fiend more than 20 years ago. Berlin-based British dance producer Ewan Pearson, who has worked with Tracey Thorn, The Rapture, and Ladytron, came on board to give this album its smooth, modern edge.

The result is "Saturdays = Youth," M83's most explicit celebration yet of how it feels to be dazed, confused and 15 years old. You can hear it on the album's first single "Graveyard Girl" – in which Gonzalez and guest vocalist Morgan Kibby (of LA-based band The Romanovs) explore the innermost thoughts of a young goth girl; "The cemetery is my home, I want to be a part of it, invisible even to the night…I'm 15 years old and I feel it's already too late to live. Don't you?"

Anthony Gonzalez is 26 years old and resides in Antibes, France.

SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS is an explosive Japanese jazz band, comprised of six musicians; Shacho (agitator, spirit), Tabu Zombie (trumpet), Motoharu (sax), Josei (piano), Akita Goldman (bass) and Midoryn (drums).

At its core, the group is about giving pulsating live performances. SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS combine the highest musicianship with the coolest of cool sounds and atmosphere. Their brand of jazz is rough around the edges, unadulterated entertainment and constantly kept at boiling point.

Each member brings his own unique talent and perspective. They originally met at a club event in Tokyo in 2001. The Tokyo club scene was dominated by DJs until SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS arrived, breaking the mold as live pioneers. Calling their music "DEATH JAZZ", they gained recognition for performing an original form of aggressive alternative jazz.

"We always felt that in the world of jazz, there was an unwritten rule that the musicians were to concentrate on their techniques and the audience were simply there to admire, like a transmitter/ receiver relationship. We wanted to break away from that and create exciting jazz with far more interaction between the players and the audience".

It did not take long for SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS to become one of the hottest new bands in Japan and becoming favorites of major festivals including Fuji Rock.

Their international breakthrough came when Gilles Peterson, the renowned British DJ, introduced the them through his Radio 1 show "WorldWide". In the summer of 2005, by invitation from Giles, the band traveled to the UK to perform on his program. The name spread further via the international jazz network and at the BBC World Wide Award later that year, SOIL & "PIMP" SESSIONS was awarded with the "John Peel Play More Jazz Award".

While continuing to perform in Japan, the band expanded their playing field performing in over 12 European countries and at major international festivals including Montreux and North Sea.

UPSET THE RHYTHM presents...

DEERHUNTER began in 2001 with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. Co-founded by Bradford Cox and Moses Archuleta in Atlanta, the band have since produced three LPs and four EPs worth of astonishing "ambient punk" - their own description - picking up devotees and different musicians along the way. Their mantra is decisive: "to achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance" and so far they haven't disappointed Jean Genet. Their live performances are almost always polarising and verge on the revelatory, so we're excited to have them play this show for us. Hot on the heels of their much acclaimed album 'Microcastle' on 4AD / Kranky, the band release a new EP, entitled 'Rainwater Cassette Exchange' digitally on May 18th and on physical formats on June 8th.

www.myspace.com/deerhunter | deerhuntertheband.blogspot.com

'Thats another FINE line up you've gotten into us again' said KOKO, and they were right! Continuing a string of the highest quality live club shows in Camden's premier nightspot Soundcrash is once more pulling out all the stops!
After a blinding set for us at the Islington Academy in March we could not get Crazy P back quick enough for another display of their contagious live electro, and this time we've invited them to Camden's premier venue along with prolific beatsmith Tom Middleton and some very special guests, with a late license so the party can go on til' 3 in the am!

To trace the origins of Crazy P we have to go all the way back to 1996. This was the year that brought together James Baron and Chris Todd, and after some exquisite studio releases the demand for a live performance continued to grow, and required the addition of extra musicians to produce the show. The beautiful Danielle Moore was located crooning her way round a house party in Manchester and given a microphone instead of a glass of wine; Tim Davies broke from the shackles of the photo lab to play bass guitar, and finally Matt Klose, who had worked with the boys before, was given the task of out-drumming the drum machine. Having settled into the five piece format with Jim and Chris at the production controls, the band have been touring their unique form of electro-indie extensively over the past few years to great acclaim wherever they land, including the Islington show that was litlerally one of the most spectacular live shows of the year.

Classically trained Tom Middleton has done it all; From work with a certain Richard D James in the early 90's right up to 2007's 'Lifetracks' LP on Big Chill Recs, via numerous projects and collaborations ranging from techno to ambient works, and co-founding the label Evolution with long-time partner Mark Pritchard he has gained an enviable reputation and deservedly so. With his live set you can expect a phonic journey through the wonders of electronic music, exploring all the possibilities of that manifold medium and encouraging dancing like an earthquake encourages buildings to fall down - inescapably!

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A CLUB SHOW AND HEADLINE ACT MAY NOT COME ON UNTIL AFTER 1AM

Having sold out Heaven in July, Passion Pit come to KOKO.

Redemption. Paranoia. Guilt. And brief glimpses of a better tomorrow, all cloaked in pop hooks that truly help the medicine go down.

What is this? Another lost LP from Brian Wilson’s sandbox phase? If only things were that simple. What we’re really alluding to here is Passion Pit’s first proper full-length, Manners, a bird-flipping break from the blogosphere by a 21 year old with much more on his manic mind than girls, girls, girls. You know, important matters, like the end of the world and learning to love someone other than the man in the mirror.

That’s the thing people missed about Passion Pit’s debut EP, Chunk of Change. While it was originally meant as a Valentine’s Day gift for a girlfriend who “put up with” frontman Michael Angelakos, that detail’s only half of a story that isn’t so cuddly when you consider the circumstances.

You see, Angelakos has written songs since he was a piano-pounding 5 year old, from spooky and spare folk tunes to pit-stirring ska punk. But one day, he just stopped. Not by choice. Angelakos’ creative well was simply in need of a severe refill, so he started toying with the plug-ins and infinite possibilities of a computer program. Six tracks later, Chunk of Change was born by default. In need of an impromptu thank you card and some feedback from friends, Angelakos started spreading the songs around quite casually, really. Which is impossible to do in an era when blogs are as obsessed with breaking the Next Big Thing as labels are.

Flash forward to 2008. With Chunk of Change’s official unmixed/mastered pressing in tow, Angelakos and the ever-evolving Passion Pit band play to a sold-out crowd at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. A crowd that sees nothing wrong with singing along to every word; even several Manners selections, learned via osmosis by the second verse. With flash bulbs popping in his face like the frontline of a rifle-toting army, Angelakos notes the bizarre scene in front of him but never loses sight of why he’s here, of his calling to craft pitch-perfect pop songs- hooks that nip at your heels and choruses that burrow into your brain.

A real deal album in other words, one that delivers on the blissful and bright promises of early fan favorites like “Sleepyhead.” It took nearly two months of explosive off-the-cuff sessions with producer Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen) to get there-everything was written and recorded on the fly-but Manners is exactly that, an irresistible, filler-free glimpse into the mind of a man who’d like to unleash his very own Pet Sounds someday.

Check the carefully-sculpted songwriting on display: the speaker-panning synths and slightly sinister children’s chorus (straight outta P.S. 22 in NYC) of “Little Secrets” and “The Reeling,” the lead dulcimer loops and melancholic melodies of “Moth’s Wings,” the ecstatic, riled-up climax of “Folds in Your Hands.” All part of a greater plan, the next step of which is taking Passion Pit’s live show to a level that matches, and eventually exceeds, Manners ambition and kaleidoscopic soundscapes. Because when Angelakos says he wants to be the next Randy Newman, he’s dead serious. And when he adds that Passion Pit is a band with a lead songwriter, not just Michael Angelakos and these guys, it’s clear he’s just getting started.

PLEASE NOTE THIS SHOW IS 16+

Proving technical dexterity, diabolic vocal grunts and a penchant for serial killers, zombies and gore of all shapes, sizes and textures, Cannibal Corpse won over the hearts of many a metal extremist and have since become a harrowing household name.
It’s been a pretty amazing journey for Amon Amarth and certainly not an undeserved one. Since releasing their first demo ‘Thor Arise’ in 1993 the band have built a solid reputation as being one of the most original and talented Swedish death metal bands ever, thanks largely to a style that is brutally aggressive yet always melodic, to which their lyrical content based on Norse and Viking mythology is perfectly matched.

Having spent years as one of the most talked about bands on the European Underground Metal circuit, they released their seventh studio album ‘Twilight Of The Thunder God’ in September 2008 to massive critical acclaim. ‘Twilight Of The Thunder God’ saw the band’s songs become more varied, incorporating the roots of death metal as well as showing openness towards different styles. Tracks like the mid-tempo scorcher "Guardians Of Asgaard", the title track ‘Twilight Of The Thunder God’ and "Where Is Your God?", the former an uptempo hymn, the latter probably the most brutal Amon Amarth track of all time, brought the band the recognition they deserved. 2008 not only saw the band release the best selling album of their career thus far, but also granted them a slot on the second stage at Download Festival as well as a live performance at the after show party of the Metal Hammer Golden God Awards and a spot on the European leg of the Unholy Alliance III Tour along side Slayer, Trivium and Mastodon.

2009 is already proving to be an even better year for the band, with 3 Metal Hammer Golden God Award nominations under their belts for ‘Best International Band’, ‘Best Shredder’ (Olavi Mikkonen/Johan Soderburg) and ‘Best Breakthrough Act’ as well as a UK headline tour announced, Amon Amarth are proving beyond doubt that they are indeed a mighty force to be reckoned with.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A 14+ SHOW
