Club NME - PLAYED ON: Friday 22 March 2013

WOLF ALICE

Gig info

Wolf Alice is Ellie Rowsell, Joel Amey, Theo Ellis and Joff. The band borrowed the name from a short story by Angela Carter and established themselves as one of London's hottest new acts thanks to their delivery of rough and powerful live sets.

There are some heavy 90s influences in Wolf Alice's music: the riot grrls' fierce attitude, the use of the quiet-loud contrast learnt from the Pixies and vocals that echoes Elastica's Justin Frischmann. With no full-length albums in sight, lead singer Ellie admits: “We got a lot of songs we really want to show people but for now they’re only available to hear live at our shows.”

Their debut single 'Fluffy' (released on February 11th through Chess Club Records) it's a two and a half minutes of pounding drums and distorted guitars with a grungy vibe, which has already become a Radio 1 favourite. Yet, with this amount of raw energy and scratchy riffs Wolf Alice are anything but Fluffy.
